Six Sigma is a very effective set of techniques that are useful to help optimize a process. Six Sigma emphasizes the statistics of the problem and the experimental dependencies of the process. As an example a Design of Experiments (DOE) can be performed on your process to efficiently measure the process parameters (Xs) that affect your process outcomes (Y's). The DOE results can be used to help optimize the process. But the optimization is usually a local optimization and does not represent the best the process can do.
